Is Lifepoint a Baptist Church?

What Makes Lifepoint a Baptist Church?

If you've been around Lifepoint for a little while, you’ve probably noticed we’re not super loud about denominational stuff. We don’t make a big fuss about labels, and you won’t find “Baptist” in neon lights out the front. But yes — we are proudly part of the Baptist family. So what does that actually mean?

Here’s the deal: being Baptist isn’t about wearing suits, singing hymns from the 1800s, or having a secret handshake. At Lifepoint, it’s about holding onto a few key convictions that have shaped who we are, how we follow Jesus, and how we do church together.

So here’s a few things that make us Baptist — Lifepoint-style.

1. We Believe Faith is Personal – No One Can Follow Jesus For You

This is a biggie. Baptists believe that every person is responsible for their own response to Jesus. You’re not born into faith. You’re not “in” just because your family’s religious. Faith has to be your decision — your personal “yes” to Jesus. That’s why we baptise people who have made that choice for themselves (more on that in a sec).

We call it soul competency — the idea that each person is made in God’s image, and can hear from Him, respond to Him, and relate to Him directly. That’s why we value things like open Bibles, prayer, and discipleship. God speaks — and you don’t need a priest or bishop to hear Him.

2. We Baptise Believers (Hence the Name!)

Yep, “Baptist” comes from our big belief in believer’s baptism. That means we baptise people after they’ve decided to follow Jesus, not as babies. We do it by full immersion, because it’s a powerful picture of what Jesus has done — dying and rising again, washing us clean, making us new.

It’s not a magic ritual. It’s a public declaration of faith. It’s someone saying, “I belong to Jesus.” And we reckon that’s something worth celebrating!

3. We’re a Local Church – Not Run by a Head Office

Another thing that makes us Baptist is how we’re organised. Lifepoint isn’t run by some big national church board or hierarchy. We’re an independent, local church that chooses to partner with others.

We belong to Queensland Baptists, which connects us with a bunch of other Baptist churches across the state. But they don’t tell us who to hire or what songs to sing. We choose to work together because unity is powerful — but we also believe each church is responsible to follow Jesus in their own unique context. That’s why Lifepoint can be, well… Lifepoint.

4. Everyone Has a Role to Play

We believe the Church is made up of everyday people empowered by the Spirit. That’s why we’re big on things like serving, spiritual gifts, and leadership development. It’s not just “the pastor’s job.” We’re all ministers of the gospel.

At Lifepoint, that looks like people running kids ministry, leading worship, praying for others, discipling mates, making meals, and even mowing the lawn! It’s the priesthood of all believers — a fancy phrase that basically means, “We’re all in this together.”

5. We Care Deeply About Freedom

From the start, Baptists have been big on religious liberty. In fact, some of the earliest Baptists got chucked in prison because they wouldn’t go along with the state church. We reckon everyone should be free to seek truth, follow their conscience, and worship God without pressure or coercion, especially from the government.

That means we don’t force belief, and we don’t think faith should be legislated. Instead, we invite people to discover the beauty of Jesus — and we trust the Spirit to do the work.

So Why Does It Matter?

Being Baptist isn’t the point. Being Jesus’ Church is. But knowing our roots helps explain why we do what we do. It’s why we don’t sprinkle babies, why we dunk new believers. It’s why we empower ordinary people and don’t have bishops in funny hats. It’s why we believe everyone is accountable to God for themselves.

And it’s why we care so much about being a gospel-shaped, Spirit-empowered, mission-focused, community-loving church in the heart of Moreton Bay City.

That’s who we are. That’s what makes us a Baptist Church — and what makes us Lifepoint.
