Frequently Asked Questions about Baptism
Who can get baptised?
Anyone who has put their faith in Jesus by repenting of their sin, believing in him, and has decided to follow him as their King.
How old do you have to be to be baptised?
There is no age limit on baptism. The only requirement is that a person can articulate the Gospel and grasp what they are declaring (see page 3 for questions to check). We have baptised children as young as 12 who have demonstrated this.
Do I have to get baptised and share my testimony in front of everyone?
Baptism is not just ‘between you and God’, it is immersion into God’s community of believers called the Church. For this reason, baptism is usually done together as a church family on a Sunday. We also encourage those wanting to be baptised to share their story of meeting Jesus as a declaration of their faith and as an encouragement to the rest of the family. If this is a huge problem stopping you from getting baptised, we believe nothing should stand in the way of baptism, so please speak to us and we will work something out!
What should I say in my testimony?
Just answer these three questions!
What was life like before you met Jesus?
How has he changed your life?
How has Lifepoint helped along the journey?
Why are you getting baptised?
Who can baptise me?
We believe in the priesthood of all believers, so any believer can baptise another believer. In the New Testament this is usually done by a Christian leader or someone who has been instrumental in your faith journey, so we tend to follow this example too.
Can I be baptised again?
We do not usually baptise someone who has already been baptised as an adult as there is no need. But we can make exceptions if someone is unsure of their first baptism, and whether they were a Christian at the time or understood what was happening.
We do baptise believers who were baptised as an infant in another denomination as that was a decision made by their parents, not them. We see this as confirming and honouring the decision made by their parents.
How do I go about getting baptised?
Speak to a Pastor, or contact us below and we will organise to have a chat to with you.
